What and how?
When working with groups, it is often necessary to form smaller subgroups, e.g. for working on tasks, getting to know each other or reflecting. We developed FindMe to make this process stimulating and playful. Instead of simply counting the participants or having the trainer divide them arbitrarily, the desired groups find each other by identifying similarities in the form of matching symbols on the picture cards that have been distributed beforehand. This is really fun and gets the group going. FindMe helps to divide groups of up to 36 participants into groups of 2 to 18 people that are as equal in size as possible. Equal size means that each group has at most one more person than the other groups. The principle also works with odd numbers of people. The cards are numbered and contain a total of 18 different symbols or search terms (e.g. hot drink, fast food, weather) with 153 assigned symbols.
Procedure
Select the cards according to the number of participants, always starting with the card numbered 1. Example: For 12 people, select cards 1–12. After each participant has received a card, the group is given the instruction: ‘Find the same ...’, using the symbol or search term you have determined. Participants can keep their cards throughout the workshop. The symbols are selected so that the groups are as mixed as possible. This means that participants are as unlikely as possible to be in a group with the same other people!
